Campaigning work of Czech section of REVOLUTION, May-July 2008
The end of May and June was in Czech republic filled with trade-union protests against neoliberal reforms of the government. There was series of four demonstrations, each one targeting concrete reform, that culminated in one-hour general strike. In the protests, obstructing role of trade-union bureaucracy was quite clearly expressed, when they organised demonstrations on working day in such time that for many workers it was not possible to participate and in organising only one-hour strike. In spite of this, there were thousands of workers at each demonstration and the strike was well supported – almost one million workers went on strike. We, of course, supported the workers and participated at all demonstrations and our members who are working also participated in the strike.
Another important issue around which we have been campaigning was the planned US radar base in Czech republic. On 8th of June warmonger Condoleeza Rice went to Prague to sign the treaty on radar, so we were mobilising to demonstration against it. On the demonstration itself was around 4000 people. We will soon bring you an overview of this now nearly two years lasting struggle in a separate article.
