Campaigning work of British section of REVOLUTION, April - May 2008

By admin - Posted on 29 May 2008

Our biggest area of work in April and May has been solidarity with the people of Palestine and in opposition to the siege of Gaza. Thousands of people took to the streets for a national demonstration in London, coinciding with the 60th anniversary of the Nakba, or ‘catastrophe’, which lead to more than 700,000 Palestinians being expelled from their land. The REVOLUTION contingent was loud and lively under the banner ‘End the Seige of Gaza, Victory to the Intifada!’.

In the run up to the demonstration, REVOLUTION Leeds initiated a local demonstration of a hundred people against the siege of Gaza. The demo was attended by radical school, college and university students, young workers and Palestinians, all chanting “in our thousands and our millions we are all Palestinians”.

We have also been campaigning against military recruitment in schools, colleges and universities. REVOLUTION members at University College London were involved in a successful campaign to kick military recruiters off campus which lead to a vicious attack from the right-wing student union bureaucracy.

REVOLUTION UK have also been carrying on our campaigning against climate change attending demonstrations against bio fuels. On the 31st of May we will be heading to Heathrow to protest against the new runway with the message that it is the capitalist system at the root of climate change! Lastly, we have taken part in a student conference organised by Education not for Sale and won it to the call for the immediate withdrawal of coalition troops from Iraq and Afganistan.
